Upstream 50km Challenge 2011

What’s involved in the Upstream Challenge?

The walk starts at Waterfront City in Melbourne’s Docklands precinct. It then progresses along a 50km route in the Melbourne Metropolitan area, making use of the scenic walking routes along the Yarra River. Four checkpoints break the 50km into 10km sections and the walk concludes at Donvale Christian College for celebrations, food and an awards presentation.

How does the event work?

Participants can enter the event in three different ways; register for the 50km Challenge as an individual or as a team or enter as a relay team.

Individual Entry: Walk the entire 50km at your own pace.

Team Entry: walk the entire 50km as a team. Teams can be made up of any number of people with a maximum of 6. Teams MUST stick together throughout the event, so if you are at different fitness levels or speed, we suggest you register as an individual.

Relay Entry: Walk the 50km as a relay. Relay teams require a minimum of 2 (and a max of 10) people and each member must walk a minimum of 30km during the duration of the 50km. Teams will need to have someone walking at all times over the 50km but each individual does not need to complete the 30km in one continuous go.

Is this a race?

The Upstream 50km Challenge is not a race, but some awards will be given at the end of the race as well as prizes for the highest fundraisers. The 50km walk will take you on average between 9-11 hours, but that depends on your level of fitness and if you rest and checkpoints.

How to Register for the Walk?

You’ll need to register by Friday 11th November 2011. There is no registration fee, but each participant must commit to fundraising a minimum of $200 in donations. $50 of which will be requested during your initial registration. All donations will go towards your total fundraising amount, are tax deductible and 100% will go towards your chosen beneficiary.

Run Melbourne (Sunday 17th July 2011)

Run Melbourne, presented by The Age

Are you looking to participate in an upcoming fun run, walk, ride or charity event in Melbourne? Come and join in Run Melbourne at Federation Square on Sunday 17th July 2011.

Run Melbourne, presented by The Age

It’s on again in 2011!

On Sunday, 17 July 2011, Run Melbourne, presented by The Age will be held once again, offering participants a half-marathon, a 10km run and a 5km run or walk, starting and finishing at Federation Square. From its inception in 1994 as Run to the G, this event has become synonymous with Melbourne.

New in 2011 is the free Run Melbourne Expo (Thursday 14 July – Saturday 16 July) and a 3km Kids Run (Saturday 16 January).

Run Melbourne, presented by The Age, is the community fitness event for everyone. With the right training, anyone, at any age and any fitness level can participate. It’s also an opportunity to raise money for the charity you care about most.

From its inception in 1994 as ‘Run to the ‘G’, this event has been held every year since (with the exception of 2001) and 2011 will be the 17th staging.

During this time, the course has taken participants past many of Melbourne’s major landmarks, including the MCG, Shrine of Remembrance, Royal Botanic Gardens, the Arts Centre, NGV and Federation Square.

However, throughout the years, the course has changed both distances and routes. Some of the most recent changes were: the decision to change the main event from an 8km to a 10km in 2003, to move the start and finish from the MCG to Federation Square in 2006, and to add the challenge of a half-marathon (21.1km) in 2006.

$280,000 was raised in 2008 for a variety of Victorian charities. In 2009, that figure almost doubled as a staggering $533,717 was raised and in 2010, 17,655 runners and walkers raised more than $1 million! This year, they are aiming to raise a much needed $1.5 million for worthy causes!

3km Kids Run

With the introduction of the Kids Run anyone can really be a part of Run Melbourne, presented by The Age in 2011.

The Kids Run is designed for young primary and secondary school students (aged between four and fourteen years old), who may not be able to complete the 5km distance. It is intended to encourage young people to lead a fit and healthy life, to set goals and to take pride in their achievements.

The Kids Run is a great way for students to represent their school in a fun, friendly and challenging community fitness event in a non-competitive atmosphere. It also provides an opportunity for them to raise funds for their favourite charity.

The Kids Run is a 3km off-road untimed run around the banks of the Yarra will be beld at 10am on SATURDAY, 16 JULY (the day before the main event). It is held on the day prior to Run Melbourne, so that kids can avoid the ‘hustle and bustle’ of the main race day, and participate with just their peers.

All kids will receive a medal for participation, and a showbag of goodies at the finish line. Their names will also be printed in the Run Melbourne Results Liftout in The Age on Tuesday, 19 July 2011.
