Sports specific exercise & fitness can involve:

  • Sport specific programs
  • In-season training
  • Pre-season training
  • Plyometrics
  • Speed
  • Agility
  • Power
  • Core stability
  • Functional training
  • and so much more…

The skill in sport specific training comes down to analysing the sport for its movement patterns and then choosing the exercise specific to the sport. This requires knowledge gained through not only courses and degrees, but through experience.

We have helped golfers, footballers, netballers, runners, swimmers, musicians, dancers, boxers, triathletes, adventurers and travellers to achieve their best physical condition possible. Now we’d love to do the same for you.

Before you begin your new exercise regime, our personal trainers will start by conducting a fitness assessment to identify YOUR goals and establish a program that will enable YOU to reach the results we are after. Depending what attributes apply your specific sport, we will measure your aerobic and anaerobic fitness, your endurance and stamina, your strength and your flexibility before comparing them to what would be ideal levels required for your sport. By identifying the areas which need improvement, your MaxNRG personal trainer will customise a program aimed at improving your overall performance.

Clients who have focused on sports specific training have find that their performance in their chosen sport advances rapidly by only making a few adjustments to their current training regime.

Ab Strength & Core Stability

Core stability is often referred to as the strength and endurance of your deep abdominal muscles and is a vital part of sports specific training. The two most common muscles often identified as being weak are the transversus abdominus and the multifidus, but often the level of activation of these muscles during sport and movement is minimal
For sports specific personal training, working on core stability is an important part of your programming. At MaxNRG PT our aim to teach you to first move confidently without the fear of pain, as we then build on the foundation of having strong core muscles.

Core training enables our athletes to control their body position, achieve optimum power, and transfer force along the entire body. Core stability is often needed in almost every sport that needs any rotational movement. Swinging a racket, throwing a cricket ball, and shooting a basketball are all actions that require your body to shift weight smoothly from one side to the other.
Specific Strength and Cardiovascular exercise prescription is a really important tool to help you get the best out of your sporting goals.

Pre-Season Training – Strength & Conditioning Coach

Our trainers are also available to look after your sporting club or team. Whether pre-season training is approaching, your team requires some more variety in their fitness sessions throughout the season or your team is simply lacking in overall fitness, performance and motivation, our qualified trainers will conduct sport specific exercise sessions to assist the team and each individual player to reach their potential.

Creating Training Programs for Sporting Performance

There are way too many gym programs and training advice that are based on body building methods, whose purpose is to look good in a mirror, not to move efficiently or powerfully for sports.

You can find endless exercises, methods and programs to use on youtube, but the key is to understand the principles of how to choose exercises that right for you.

First Step – Develop the optimal functional movement patterns and body awareness

This bottom layer is what everything is built from. If you have a problem at this level, it just gets bigger the higher up you move through the pyramid. Not checking the optimal movement patterns will cause the athlete to use compensatory movements that lead to poor performance and injury. You cannot make something strong and powerful if it is unstable and not even aligned in the correct position to begin with. Mastering fundamental skills in sports is the key to learning more advanced skills later on, and is also true for movements in the gym.

Second Step – Improve Posture and Mobility

For many of the things that prevent people from moving well are mobility and stability based. Rarely is it due to a lack of strength, even if there is a strength deficit it would have been created from poor stability and mobility. This step is important to spend a lot of time in for it can really prepare you for the much more intense and rigorous training ahead

Third Step – Strength Training

Now is time to build strength and we have a number of measurements and base line tests that we use to tick off with this step. So what are the best strength exercises? It depends… dumbbell goblet squats, deadlifts, pull ups, multi direction lunges, pallof press, cable and medicine ball wood chops, chin ups and all versions of single arm cable push and pulls.

Forth Step – Power Training

Power cannot be developed with strength, but it is vital in almost every single sport to be explosive and have speed. That is where incorporating power training comes in.

Fifth Step – Sport Specific Skills and Training

Now is the stage where we try to take all the things we have worked on separately being mobility, posture, stability, movement skills, strength and power and try to make them more specific to what you need in your chosen sport. It is in this stage that you need to be clear on what abilities you need or what position you are playing. In AFL an on-baller needs different skills than a Centre Half Forward, in the same way that a CHF uses different skills than a Back Pocket footballer.
