Stay Healthy & Fit During Your Pregnancy

Learn how to stay healthy and fit during your pregnancy. When you become pregnant you immediately want to do what’s best for your baby from the very start and that means taking care of yourself. If you are pregnant and have never exercised now is the perfect time to start. Walking, stretching, and gentle yoga are all great activities for those new to physical activity.

Pregnancy and Exercise
Pregnancy is a time to rest, relax and take care of yourself, but you don’t want to become lethargic. Just because you are pregnant it does not mean you need to give up your favorite fitness routines.

We recommend to first speak to your doctor, and once given the all clear, a gentle exercise and fitness program will boost your emotional and mental health, as well as providing many physical benefits. Having a regular and well structured exercise plan will improve your sleep, reduce aches and pains; increase strength and endurance for labor, and help you bounce back quickly after giving birth.

Postnatal Exercise and Fitness

Don’t put yourself on hold until your kids are bigger, or you have more time, or you look good enough to join a gym (backwards), or your best friend joins with you. You can start taking care of yourself today! Our trainers are here to help and can get you started straight away.

Getting back into Exercise
Getting back into health and fitness after pregnancy can often be a daunting process for mothers. If you’ve just had a baby or you’re just getting back into the swing of exercise 15 years after your last baby, MaxNRG Personal Training is the perfect environment to start small. We offer in-home training, mobile training sessions as well as sessions in our private personal training studio in Ascot Vale, VIC.

Body After your Baby
With our postnatal fitness programs we can show you how you can totally reclaim your body after baby. In fact you can be stronger! One of our trainers first goals is to help educate you about what is really going on with your body after being pregnant. Getting your body and fitness back after pregnancy can be hard, and it sometimes it is not that you are not doing enough, it could be that you just didn’t know what was really happening with your body.

When you are working with our personal trainers, we make sure to educate you on how a woman’s body works before, during, and after pregnancy. Without the correct training programs and understanding of proper exercise techniques and nutrition a basic training program could hinder your physical transformation. Our pre and post natal personal trainers are fully qualified and experienced health professionals, who also work very closely with a fantastic womens health physiotherapist.

Prenatal Fitness Programs

Women who take part in regular exercise generally cope better with the physical challenges of pregnancy and the demands of labour, as well as recovering faster after birth. If you already have an established exercise routine, ask your doctor if it’s okay to continue. Pregnant women should focus on low-impact exercises, and strength training routines need to be modified by switching to lighter weights while increasing the repetitions. Abdominal exercises may also need to be modified as the pregnancy progresses. Kegel exercises are very beneficial yet simple exercises, which strengthen the pelvic floor and aid in labor.

Exercising When Pregnant
Regular physical activity when pregnant provides many health and social benefits and may also help manage some symptoms of pregnancy. Unless you have complications, you should be able to enjoy some level of physical activity throughout most of your pregnancy. We always recommend every new client looking to exercise while pregnant should first consult with your doctor, physiotherapist or healthcare professional before we create you a suitable exercise program with your trainer.

Exercise during your pregnancy can help with:

  • Improving posture
  • Improving muscle tone
  • Improving body awareness and improving self-image
  • Strengthening of pelvic floor muscles
  • Increasing one’s sense of well-being
  • Decreasing fatigue

Staying active, healthy, and fit throughout pregnancy will benefit both you and your baby and help you recover faster after birth.

Postnatal Fitness Programs

Our postnatal fitness programs are designed to help you return to your pre-pregnancy fitness and get back into shape. Generally, most new mothers can commence exercise 6 weeks post-birth, however we always recommend you check with your doctor before commencing any exercise program with our personal trainers.

“I want to start exercising whilst I’m pregnant”

So you want to start exercising? That’s fantastic, and a great idea. Whether you decide to train with one of our experienced pre and post natal personal trainers or you want to do it by yourself, there are a few cautions that all mum’s to be should take note of.

Below are some cautions when exercising whilst pregnant that you should be aware of.

While most forms of fitness training and exercise are safe, there are some exercises that involve positions and movements patterns that may be uncomfortable or harmful for pregnant women. It is best to be guided by one of our personal trainers or by your doctor or physiotherapist, but if you do plan to exercise by yourself general cautions include:

  • Avoid raising your body temperature too high. You don’t want to be sweating too much and in warm weather scale back the intensity of your exercise.
  • You can push yourself during some forms of exercise but don’t exercise to the point of exhaustion.
  • When doing strength/weight training, choose a lower weight that usual and aim to keep your repetitions higher than usual (15-20 reps).
  • If you are feeling ill or too run down on a particular day, let your body rest and skip your scheduled workout, or complete it later that day when your feeling better.
  • Make sure to listen to your body! If you are feeling low on energy and don’t feel like exercising that day, have a rest day
  • If you were already exercising before you were pregnant, that’s great, but don’t increase the intensity of your current training regime. While you are pregnant, you should try and keep your intensity no higher than 75% of your maximum.
  • If you are ever unsure about a certain exercise or your current training program ask your trainer and speak with your doctor or midwife before continuing your exercise.
