The 2013 Melbourne Marathon Festival will be sponsored by Medibank this year as they help support this iconic Melbourne running Festival which has been run each year since 1978.

The 2013 Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival will be held on Sunday October 13 and is the 36th year the event has been run.

The Melbourne Marathon Festival has five separate events to choose from and anyone and everyone can enter.

Entries into all events are now open.

Register now and take advantage of the special Early Bird prices!

A record 6218 runners completed the 2012 Medibank Melbourne Marathon to make it the largest in Australian history. More than 32,000 entries were received across the five events. We hope to see you back at the MCG on October 13, 2013!

The Event is set in the heart of Melbourne with various event courses running through Yarra Park, St Kilda and the City of Port Phillip. Like previous years the Marathon is also planned to finish in the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Entries into all event categories including the Medibank Melbourne Marathon, the Flight Centre Half Marathon, The Coffee Club 10km, the Asics 5.7km and the Asics 3km Walk are open and you can register online now!

The Medibank Melbourne Marathon is the largest marathon in Australia, we strive to deliver a world class event that will accommodate the increasing demand. In 2013 we have made further improvements to the marathon course for participant safety and to reduce course crowding:

  • Increased road Width – the use of the centre of St Kilda Rd from Toorak Rd to Southbank Blvd exclusively for marathon runners until 10.00am
  • Added runner lanes – in St Kilda Rd where the half marathon and marathon merge we have separate running lanes with exclusive lanes for marathon only
  • Separated the half marathon course from marathon – so that the last 8 km of the course is a marathon only course – runners do merge as they enter the MCG

A brief course description:

Start Location
– Batman Avenue (150m north of Rod Laver Arena entrance) Melway Ref 2G A7

Course Description

  • Start Batman Avenue
  • Runners head north along Batman Avenue; left into Flinders Street, left into Swanston Street, cross to northbound (west side) service lane at Princes Bridge and then head south along St Kilda Road.
  • At St Kilda Junction, runners turn right into Fitzroy Street then right into Lakeside Drive and do an anticlockwise lap of Albert Park Lake.
  • The Lake loop requires runners to turn left into Albert Road Drive from Lakeside Drive and left into Aughtie Drive continuing around the Albert Park Lake roadway.
  • At the Carousel carpark, runners proceed behind and around Pits Building using Aughtie Walk, entering the pit lane in Aughtie Drive before U-turning approx 300m past the Pits Building.
  • Proceed to a right hand turn into Village Green Rd and right into Lakeside Drive and right in to Fitzroy St.
  • Runners then make a right hand turn at Acland St extension proceed north onto Beaconsfield Parade, to a U-turn just before Bay St (Dow St) heading south toward St Kilda along Beaconsfield Parade.
  • At the Beaconsfield Parade intersection with Jacka Boulevard, runners will veer right and head towards Elwood using Jacka Boulevard and Marine Parade to Ormond Esplanade and turning right into the Elwood Park Recreation area, follow the roadways through to right hand turn exit at Ormond Esplanade to a U-Turn in Ormond Esplanade near St Kilda St.
  • After the U-Turn runners proceed north along Ormond Esplanade, Marine Parade, Jacka Blvd in southbound lanes to right hand turn into extension of Acland St, followed by a left hand turn into Fitzroy St.
  • At St Kilda Junction runners turn left into St Kilda Road northbound center lanes continuing to a left hand turn into Southbank Blvd, followed by a right hand turn into Sturt St, proceeding (under the St Kilda Rd) along Alexandra Ave to a right hand turn into Linlithgow Ave.
  • Proceed along Linlithgow Ave (marathon Runners must move to the left side of the road in Linlithgow Ave)onto Birdwood Ave to a right hand turn into Domain Rd. Followed by a right hand turn onto St Kilda Rd Southbound Service lane.
  • Proceed along St Kilda Rd Over Princes Bridge into Swanston St to a right hand turn onto Flinders St.
  • Runners then veer right into Wellington Parade South, turn right into Jolimont Rd, which becomes Brunton Avenue.
  • Marathoners then turn left into MCG and do the MCG loop to finish.

  • Proceed along St Kilda Road to a right hand turn at Princes Walk (just prior to) Fed Square.
  • Competitors then run along the path next to Birrarung Marr before veering right on to the William Barak Bridge.
  • At the end of the bridge they make a hairpin left hand turn on to Jolimont St followed by a left turn on to Brunton Avenue before a final left hand turn left into MCG and do the MCG loop to finish.

Start Time – 7.30am (2 Wave Starts)
In the 10km and 5.7km Runs, there are 2 wave starts to reduce the congestion at the start line. These will be a Sub 55 Minute wave and an over 55 Minute wave. Please select the appropriate category when registering and upon starting the race, please start in the allocated wave as per your Race Bib Colour.

Early Bird – Adult $60.00, Child $35.00
Standard – Adult $80.00, Child $45.00

  • Proceed along St Kilda Road to a right hand turn at Princes Walk (just prior to) Fed Square Competitors then run along the path next to Birrarung Marr before veering right on to the William Barak Bridge.
  • At the end of the bridge they make a hairpin left hand turn on to Jolimont St followed by a left turn on to Brunton Avenue.
  • 10km entrants (only) use the north bound lanes in Brunton Ave to a U-Turn past the MCG then back along Brunton Ave in southbound lanes.
  • Runners then turn right the MCG to the finish.

Walkers not recommended however if you would like to enter The Coffee Club 10km event but only want to walk, please place yourself at the rear of the start field and be aware that both Marathon & Half Marathon courses use the same roads and they will be coming from behind you.

  • Walkers – you may be required to move onto the walking paths.

  • Entrants head north along Batman Avenue and turn left just past William Barak Bridge (320m) and follow the path next to Birrarung Marr and Princes Walk.
  • Entrants turn left onto Princes Bridge and left again into the path that leads down the back of Alexandra Gardens.
  • Runners then cross Boathouse Drive, and follow the Yarra River on the lower path under Swan St Bridge, proceed to the upper path to left hand turn crossing Morell Bridge, left hand turn onto the path under Swan St Bridge, following the river path before veering right onto wooden bridge in Birrarung Marr.
  • Turn right onto William Barak Bridge with a hairpin left hand turn on to Jolimont St at the end of the bridge followed by a left turn onto Brunton Avenue under the William Barak Bridge to a left hand turn into the MCG.

If you wish to WALK, please enter the 3km Walk event. But if you are walking very slowly in a group, please keep an eye out for runners as you get close to the MCG and do not block their path.

  • Start Batman Avenue
  • Entrants head north along Batman Avenue in southbound lanes up to Flinders St and do a U-turn and head back down Batman Avenue in the nthbd lanes.
  • Walkers turn right just before William Barak Bridge (320m) and follow the path next to Birrarung Marr and Princes Walk.
  • Just prior to Fed Square, turn left and head south/east along the river side of Birrarung Marr to the wooden footbridge.
  • Entrants turn left onto wooden bridge in Birrarung Marr.
  • Right turn onto William Barak Bridge with a hairpin left hand turn on to Jolimont St at the end of the bridge followed by a left turn onto Brunton Avenue under the William Barak Bridge to a left hand turn into the MCG.

Please note – This is a non-timed event therefore you will not receive a Timing Chip in your Race Pack.

If you do wish to RUN, you will need to enter the 5.7km RUN event.

Congratulations to Kenyan Jonathan Chesoo, winner of the Men’s Marathon in a time of 2:12.35. The first Australian across the line was Scott Westcott (NSW) in 2:16.

The Women’s Marathon was won by Lauren Shelley (WA) in 2:36.29.

This year, we will head ‘Back to the G’ for another action packed weekend of events!

Last years 2011 event was away from the MCG, but this year all participants will have the opportunity to cross the finish line on the grass of the famous MCG.

Race Packs

In 2012, Race Packs will commence distribution at the start of September.

As mentioned above, if you registered in the Early Bird Period (May 7 – July 29) your Race Pack will be sent to you at the address provided. If you registered in the Standard Entry Period (July 30 – October 12) you must collect your Race Pack from the Race Week Office during opening hours.

Your Race Pack will include the following items:

Race Bib

Your Race Bib identifies you as an official competitor of the Melbourne Marathon Festival Event. Race Numbers must be worn on the front of your T-shirt or singlet. No participant is permitted to start, or will be allowed on course without their correct race number. On the reverse side of your Race Bib, each competitor will need to complete the details as requried for medical purposes. Please compete this prior to race morning.

IMPORTANT: Your Timing chip is on the back of the Race Bib and may appear as a label. DO NOT REMOVE OR TAMPER WITH THIS CHIP in any way as it might result in NO TIME being recorded for your effort.

Safety Pins

Your Race Pack will also come with Safety Pins. These pins are to be used to secure your Race Bib to the front of you shirt. If you forget to bring safety pins on the day, there will be extra safety pins available at the event.

Competitor Information Booklet

Your Competitor Information booklet will be your go to point for all information regarding your race and other helpful tips for Race Day.

Race Week Office

If you don’t register before the early bird period finishes Sunday July 29 – 11.59pm you must collect your race day kits from the Race Week Office. The Race Information Office will be operational at the MCG during Race Week for late entries, collection of race packs, change of events and for any other questions you have about the event.

This Lake loop requires runners to turn left into Albert Road Drive from Lakeside Drive and left into Aughtie Drive continuing around the Albert Park Lake roadway. At the Carousel carpark, runners proceed behind and around Pits Building using Aughtie Walk before U-turning in Aughtie Drive approx 300m past the Pits Building. Proceed to a right hand turn into Village Green Rd and right onto Lakeside Drive and right on to Fitzroy St.

Runners then make a right hand turn at Acland St extension into Beaconsfield Parade, proceed north to a U-turn just before Bay St heading south back toward St Kilda along Beaconsfield Parade.

At the Beaconsfield Parade intersection with Jacka Boulevard, runners will veer right and head towards Elwood using Jacka Boulevard and Marine Parade to Ormond Esplanade and turning right into the Elwood Park Recreation area, follow the roadways through to right hand turn exit at Ormond Esplanade to a U-Turn in Ormond Esplanade near Kingsley St. Runners then proceed north along Ormond Esplanade, Marine Parade, Jacka Blvd in southbound lanes to right hand turn into extension of Acland St, followed by a left hand turn into Fitzroy St.

Runners then turn left into the St Kilda Road northbound lanes and continue to left hand turn into Southbank Blvd, right hand turn into Sturt St and proceed (under the St Kilda Rd) along Alexandra Ave to a right hand turn into Linlithgow Ave. Proceed along Linlithgow Ave to Birdwood Ave to right hand turn into Domain Rd. Followed by a right hand turn into St Kilda Rd. Proceed along St Kilda Rd to a right hand turn into Flinders St.

Runners then veer right into Wellington Parade South, turn right into Jolimont Rd, which becomes Brunton Avenue. Marathoners then turn left into MCG and do loop to finish.

Cut Off Time Limits – Half Marathon runners must be past St Kilda Junction prior to the cut off time of 10:30am.

Minimum Age – 16 years of age on Race Day

KM markers – Km markers will be placed every 1km on course

A brief course description:

Start Batman Avenue. Runners head north along Batman Avenue; left into Flinders Street, left into Swanston Street, cross to northbound (west side) service lane at Princes Bridge and then head along St Kilda Road.

At St Kilda Junction, runners turn right into Fitzroy Street then right into Lakeside Drive and do a lap anti-clockwise circuit of the Lake.

Competitors then run along the path next to Birrarung Marr before veering right on to the William Barak Bridge. At the end of the bridge they make a hairpin left hand turn on to Jolimont St followed by a left turn on to Brunton Avenue before a final left hand turn into the MCG and loop to finish.

Start Time – 7.30am (2 Wave Starts)
There will be two wave starts in The Coffee Club 10km Run. These will be a Sub 55 Minute wave and an over 55 Minute wave. Please select the appropriate category when registering and upon starting the race, please start in the allocated wave as per your Race Bib Colour.

Standard (July 30 – October 12) – Adult $75, Child $45

Walkers not recommended however if you would like to enter The Coffee Club 10km event but only want to walk, please place yourself at the rear of the start field and be aware that both Marathon & Half Marathon courses use the same roads and they will be coming from behind you. YOU MAY BE REQUIRED TO MOVE TO THE WALKING PATHS.

The ASICS 5.7km Run starts at Batman Avenue. Entrants head north along Batman Avenue and turn left just past William Barak Bridge (320m) and follow the path next to Birrarung Marr and Princes Walk. Entrants turn left onto Princes Bridge and left again into the path that leads down the back of Alexandra Gardens.

Runners then cross Boathouse Drive, and follow the Yarra River on the lower path under Swan St Bridge, proceed to the upper path to left hand turn crossing Morell Bridge, left hand turn onto the path under Swan St Bridge, following the river path before veering right onto wooden bridge in Birrarung Marr. Right turn onto William Barak Bridge with a hairpin left hand turn on to Jolimont St at the end of the bridge followed by a left turn onto Brunton Avenue under the William Barak Bridge to a left hand turn into the MCG.

If you wish to WALK, please enter the 3km Walk event. But if you are walking very slowly in a group, please keep an eye out for runners as you get close to the MCG and do not block their path.

Runners turn right just before William Barak Bridge (320m) and follow the path next to Birrarung Marr and Princes Walk.

Just prior to Fed Square, turn left and head south/east along the river side of Birrarung Marr to the wooden footbridge. Entrants turn left onto wooden bridge in Birrarung Marr. Right turn onto William Barak Bridge with a hairpin left hand turn on to Jolimont St at the end of the bridge followed by a left turn onto Brunton Avenue under the William Barak Bridge to a left hand turn into the MCG.

This is Walking ONLY event

If you do wish to RUN, you will need to enter the 5.7km RUN event.
